2013 Plinth Gallery Workshops

We have three workshops scheduled for 2013.

Lisa Pedolsky -April 6-7, 2013 “Design, Decoration and the Handbuilt Pot”

Using techniques similar to package design and dressmaking, we will explore a multi-layered approach to slab constructed functional ceramics.  Participants will be guided through the process from initial drawings, to pattern design using paper and roofing felt, to assembling components. Surface treatment will include the use of slip, sgraffito, stencils, and unconventional tools to achieve visual and tactile depth.  Technical and aesthetic aspects will be considered while exploring closed and open forms including boxes, bowls, platters and cups. Participants will leave the workshop feeling competent in a number of forming methods.

•All levels of experience are welcome.

•Cost for 2 days, includes all materials and catered lunch  $250

•Graduate credit is available through Adams State College

Mary Fischer  - August 3-4, 2013

Using thin slabs and extruded parts, Fischer will demonstrate her techniques for assembling her architecturally inspired ceramic constructions. Using stains, engobes, and other ceramic decorating methods, Mary will show how she enriches her work with surfaces that have depth and interest. As her work is fired in an electric kiln, she uses a white slip before bisque firing and will show her techniques with washes and under-glaze pencils to selectively accent the edges. She will also demonstrate her use of image transfer with a variety of techniques. This will be a participatory workshop with time to experiment making your own work that incorporates her techniques.

•All levels of experience are welcome.

•Cost for 2 days, includes all materials and catered lunch  $250

•Graduate credit is available through Adams State College

David Crane Workshop October 5-6, 2013

David will demonstrate altering round forms into his signature squared forms as well as two part forms such as containers with lids. He will further refine these forms by trimming and further reshaping them by rasping and then cutting the feet. On pieces that have become leather hard, he will show his resist process with slips. While his detailed glazing is somewhat complicated and very time consuming he will demonstrate his basic process of multiple layers of resist glazing. This workshop will be of interest to students of any level looking to expand their ceramic forming and finishing skills.
